I read the pro/con reviews from users on Amazon, and watched the video clips by Amazon. The common thread for pro is the dl speed, screen tech and amazon backing up your purchases. The common thread for con is price, direct pdf capability, size, keyboard and price. All considered I almost bought one last night, but I am a sucker for gadgets. Personally, I think the first out of the chute price is reasonable (remember the iphone initial price) considering the connection with no contract, dl speed, book title selection, free online dictionary (not sure about total web access). I love new gadgets so I am looking forward to your assessment of it.

I guess I just don't get the eBook thing. Regular novels are portable, high-contrast and you don't have to worry about batteries dying. I used to use a Palm TX for medical reference while rounding in the hospital. Twice it screwed up to the point where it was useless. Now I carry around my little analog reference books for if I need them and my patients no longer think I'm reading my email on my Palm while I'm really trying to figure out dosages of drugs ;) Now I do understand if you need to have big thick surgical reference books. Much easier to carry around a laptop to make reference to them than 20 pound books.

Good luck with Dish HD. It did not work out well for me and when I canceled they refused to take the second dish back. They said to leave it installed even though I am no longer using it. With that said, though, I still like Dish much more than Comcast.

I did not see information about the books being backed up on Amazon, so that's great to see. However (and this is a minor point), the website says the dictionary is built-in, not online (There is Wikipedia information available, though).

I have Dish HD with the VIP 622. It has a USB port to add up to a 750GB external HD. It's pretty solid if not spectacular. Although once you go HD you'll never watch standard def again!
