Ah, our tasts are alike - I too liked Andy’s article!
THE PDA DASH!!!!! I am shocked. With all the rumors of an iPhone, maybe you couldn’t wait. But with Palm, Sidekick, Symbian and some other OS options I am very surprised to see the Dash as your device. Though you can’t beat the price. I look forward to your review.
Oh yeah if it wasn’t clear for others, Cali holds up the Tmobile Dash a Windows Mobile OS device as her new phone.
Yay! Welcome back, nice show. The rest really did well for you.
Youre not the only person raving about the archos, is it finally time to get one? I wasnt too impressed with the earlier offers.
Oh yeah! I wanted that ipod! Pick me next time!
Welcome back!
What was the deal with iTunes posting ‘EXPLISIT’
I wasn’t finished yet…
What was the deal with iTunes posting ‘EXPLICIT’ on episode #98?…
It’s explicit because of the “squirting” thing….it just seemed appropriate. We have a lot of people under 18 that watch the show, and since there normally isn’t anything that is questionable, we thought it would be best to be safe.
I really like your show. Having said that I have to say you bash the Zune with out owning one, if you owned one you would know they really are pretty good. As for the comments about putting the RIAA first? Have another look at iTunes, another company that does not put the users first! Talk about DRM hell.. Sorry but iPod is no better, and iTunes on Windows is just a joke. I love iTunes on a Mac its great, hate that its all DRM’d tho. Squirting is really a bad term.. I have to agree they need a better one. Bottom line is you do seem to bash Microsoft so much I have to believe you hate MS. Too bad cause they have done some good in the world. But then thats just my opinion. The setup of the Zune was as easy as setting up my iPod, sorry but that guy must be with out any gray matter if he found the Zune hard to setup..
**sniffle** I’m so misunderstood…
1. I started putting Splenda in the OJ because I bought a gallon that was just plain bitter. And, I’m too cheap to throw out bitter juice. Believe me, this juice without Splenda in it was just…drain opener. But now I’m hooked.
2. You kept referring to me as “he”. Usually I’m only mistaken for a guy at drive-thrus and on the phone. Does my writing not reflect my two x-chromasomes? Should I start wearing more eyeliner?
I’ll give a nickel to the first brave soul who asks Ms. Dewey about Zune squirting
And I forgot to mention…Andy Ihnatko rules. He’s very down to earth and to the point. He’s been a favorite ever since I owned my Mac II. I wonder if he still makes aquariums out of Mac SE bodies.
I googled “squirting”. Thanks for ruining that word for me.
Well I have to wait till I get home to watch this episode stupid need password for proxy server at work :(
Things are certainly becoming interesting when it comes to Microsoft trying to get there Zune out there. As anyone accepted the terms from them yet?
As for iPods and Zunes and all the other players out there and the supposite iPhone, what I really want to see is Apple bring back the Newton with a colour screen.
Zaipai: I don’t hate MS, if you look at the history of Geek Brief, we’ve said good things about them. We love pretty much everything Live Labs does (Photosynth, Ms. Dewey, etc). I can’t own one because I don’t a Windows machine, and they’re not compatible with Macs, but we did play with one, so I’m speaking from experience. About the setup experience, it wasn’t just him, there have been lots of reports on the same thing, but I’m glad you had a great experience with it! :) I would prefer Apple to not have DRM, of course, but I think their DRM is much more fair because it’s a compromise between the needs of consumers, content producers, and Apple. I can’t see one thing in Zune DRM that’s at all good for users, and I think it’s absolutely unforgivable that they add DRM to MP3 files created by podcasters, because in almost all cases it violates the license under which the podcast is released. No doubt about it, I prefer Apple, but because of the nature of podcasting and the way Apple has embraced it, the majority of podcast listeners and viewers also prefer Apple. That will definitely change if Windows embraces it, and I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress!
R Pyle: OMG, I’m so sorry!! With a name like “R”, what was I supposed to think? lol
Cali,
Are you aware that if you want to run Vista under parallels, you will have to legally spend no less than $300 for it? Running Vista home basic ($200) or Vista home Premium ($239) under any virtualization technology violates the EULA. Microsoft claims that this is because home users don’t understand virtualization, but I think its just so they can get more money from you.
Also, Vista will require more DRM than windows XP when it comes to activation. You currently have to activate windows XP to use it, but once its activated you don’t have to worry about anything unless you have a major hardware change. With Vista, however your computer will periodically connect to Microsoft and re-verify your activation, and unlike the current “Windows Genuine Advantage”, Vista may lock you out of your computer until you buy another copy of vista or prove that your current one is genuine. I don’t recommend anyone upgrade to Vista.

Hey has anyone seen the new mac ads? I just got off apples site and I found them quite good, the 3rd one is he best.
For anyone that is thinking of upgrading to Vista I would wait atleast a year and maybe a service pack or two release. I know were I work we are not going to take the plung to Vista because of security concerns and the bugginess of the Operation System.
In reference to Asa I do not need to have Vista call home to Microsoft. since it could be concerned a security issue, since who know what information is getting sent out and if you shut it off or it can not call home it could bring your network down, since it could wig out because it can not get confort that mommy is there.
hmmm… i googled ‘’squirting” and that probably ruined my day
i can still se the pictures in my head… those stinkbugs are really awful
Worst Dress EVER. Seriously. Burn that thing, it’s just looks…i dunno..frumpy. I’m sure you get a boatload of emails everyday saying how beautiful you look, so I’m not worried about hurting your feelings with this. You usually look great….anyway..why am I telling you this?
Anyway. The Zune…I want to like it..really. The interface is outstanding (better than the IPod). The screen is beautiful and navigating is wonderful. Everything else is just bad, really, really bad.
I agree that the zune has a nice screen and interface (altho, a touch wheel.. or even a wheel would be better. why have a circle and have it push button?). I have only played with it in store, so I don’t know about interface and all that.
However, I hate how everyone is griping so much on the zune marketplace structure. Yes, it’s inconvenient and stupid, but so many thing also follow this mundane idea, yet they don’t get belittled as much as the MS offer it seems.
And while Apple’s DRM is “lesser of the evils,” it still needs quite a few things….
-Family sharing… not sure how this could be done, maybe assign up to 3-4 apple accounts to play music? I’m sure the RIAA wouldn’t be happy unless you paid a little more… but that is no where near ideal.
-higher bitrate… lossless would be nice, but just a small bump from 128 would suffice for me
-Burn movies/tv… iTV may be around the corner, but at $300, not every TV in the house can get one. And I can bring a movie to a friend’s house, you know, like a DVD. It would also serve as a nice backup too. It won’t ever happen probably, but here’s to wishful thinking
Jabberwocky, I like the new ads that apple has dished out as well. Actually, Apple seems to be improving a lot lately, I love the new MacBook, aside from it having integrated graphics, and love the Pro’s. Of course they are too expensive for my taste, but hey, it’s an apple. Also, I agree with the Zune review Chicago Times gave it, I don’t own as Zune, and never will, but I tried it out at a local store and am really dismayed. It’s way too big, the screen may be big, but the Album art really doesn’t look good, especially if they album art is not the size of the Zune’s screen, and the zune has to fit it, then it looks ugly, if not fugly. It’s an okay device, but I’ve seen way better. I really was expecting more from MSoft. I dont hate them, I’m looking forward to the release of Vista as well, as I am a Windows user, but the Zune is not what i thought it would be.
[...] For the first post of the year, I’ll return to my inane gadget musing of the past. Now I don’t own a Zune. In fact, I’ve never touched one. But I can tell I don’t want one … yet. If they ever get Linux on it, then the chances are it’d be awesome. If the wifi was actually wifi (as in, check your email and surf the web) and the “squirting” was just straight file sharing, it’d be cooler than an iPod: the screens bigger and the battery lasts longer. As it stands, every body thinks it sucks, from GeekBrief to Leo Laporte to CNN. I would never get one now because it doesn’t work on Mac. Even the Zune-a-philes have lists of needed improvements, like Zune Luv. To boot, Microsuck has made some freaky ads.
