Having a houseful of gadgets isn’t all shiny, happy. It’s more like spaghetti. It’s a pile of wires. You’ve got power cords, USB cables, A/V cables, and other A/V cables. It’s a big, old, nasty mess. We thought of a way to fix it, and on this edition of Geek Brief, we show you how to turn your gadget chaos into gadget nirvana.

Cali - This was a GREAT episode! Thanks for the great idea to use a shoe organizer to create a neat storage place for the myriad of gadgets we all have! I really enjoyed the DIY / How-to nature of this episode - I’m headed to the Container Store tomorrow to get one of those organizers, and will order a “Power Squid” from ThinkGeek using your link too!

    Regards,

    Radi

    “speghetti” is spelled “spaghetti.”

very funny show. could you just release a show of outtakes?

Uhh, Girls an tools, great :D

If you want the hole to be perfect there are 3 things to take care of:
    1) drill from the front side (as you said)
    2) put some thin ducktape over the place you are going to drill in (remove it afterwards)
    3) drill at the fastest speed your drill has

In addition to the comments of BastI:

I usually get the best results when doing the things he mentioned, but in addition I put a piece of scrap wood right under the hole to be drilled. First of all, it’ll protect your cardboard from breaking if you apply too much pressure, but most importantly, if the wood’s surface is smooth enough, there won’t be any room for the rough edges to form themselves.

Great episode… but I have to admit that I was thinking how funny it would have been to have Cali in a bikini when she was using the drill (like the pictures you see in the tool calendars at the auto shop.)

Wow, I felt a special kinship during this episode - I got my Christmas present early, a brand new Kawasaki drill, so I could fix the stair rail to the cellar yesterday. Chicks with power tools, we rock!

And in addition to what Basti and Neorej said (though I’d amend Basti’s a little to say either lightweight duct tape or blue painter’s tape) I wonder if one would get a cleaner cut from a hole saw instead of a spade bit - or on wood of that thickness it could be overkill.

Very cool tip tho and I love the power squid anyway.

An off-topic question, sorry. I watched your piece on CastBlaster and was inspired. So, I went to the website and was surprised (coming from you) that the program is PC based only. Is there an equivelent (did I spell that right?) Mac based program? If, wht is it. Can you email me?

Hey - I didn’t think of it, but I believe the other “Rick” is on to something here with the Tool Calender. Maybe make a minor adjustment and call it a….

    Gadget Calender!!

Complete with Cali in various forms of dress (formal, casual, risque-model stuff) showing off all her different gadgets. Neil could even cameo appearances, like a “where’s waldo”! (really challenging since we don’t know what Neil looks like)

With electronics becoming so quickly outdated, the calenders will become collectibles…maybe before the year is out?!

Leave it to a Rick to come up with a great idea!

This is actually a slick idea!

Did something change on your videos? For some reason, my screen is some kind of purple color now. It’s very distracting to try and watch the video.

Love the idea of using a shoe organizer. I found a good price for a 25 slot one at Target that is around $45. Here’s the link:

    Just a thought:
Maybe if Neal would allow himself to be seen on camera…people might remember how to spell his name correctly…all the time!
    (sorry about the earlier post!)

How about a screenshot of Cali with the drill in the Charlies Angles pose at about 18seconds in. For a desktopbackground, or screensaver. That’s awesome!

    Great show guys.

Hey, I was wondering what that screensaver is that you use on your mac in show #0332 at about 1 min and 49 sec in?

  17. Comment by Cali on March 25, 2008 11:57 pm

It’s just one of the screensavers that comes with OS X.
