Ever since Boot Camp was released, we wanted to install Windows. It’s a necessary evil. If we don’t have Windows, we can’t cover Windows applications on GeekBrief.TV.

The choices for running Windows on a Mac are Boot Camp and Parallels. I’ve worked with Parallels and loved the experience, but I want my Mac and Windows experiences separate, so I’m going with Boot Camp. Plus, it’s free! :)

UPDATE: I wrote a rant criticizing Bono and American Idol last night. I don’t agree with what I said about Bono, so I took it down. I was frustrated with American Idol because it’s supposed to be an entertainment show. Johnny Carson said something like don’t use your position for anything other than entertainment. That’s the gist of what he said - not an exact quote. The American Idol Gives Back thing seemed overly self indulgent. What Oprah’s doing in Africa is far more meaningful. She’s not throwing money at the problem. She’s changing people’s lives from the ground up. I’ve given money to Bono’s One campaign, but I still get frustrated with him thinking money is the solution. I just don’t believe that.

Boot camp all the way… because if you want to, you can always use parallels to boot from boot camp :D And that’s a big reason I want a mac pro, I can actually use a separate HDD for my windows partition. Stupid limited imac :(

Anyway, yes, far too much coffee.. haha. And turn off the User permission stuff… soooo annoying.

And is there something up w/ the compression? the large itunes format looks overly compressed

Another great episode keep them coming

  3. Comment by Prostr8 on April 25, 2007 9:32 pm

How is bootcamp free? I thought it was just released out of Beta and there was some story about them crippling the drive management features of the beta now that the paid version is in the wild. Am I confused?

@Linh - are you saying to install bootcamp and windows then use Parallels to launch Windows in a window when booting into Windows would otherwise not be necessary? What a great solution.

@Linh also mentions iMac limitation regarding separate physical drives for the Windows Partition. Can’t you put Windows on a separate drive if it’s connected by Firewire? or is only Mac OS capable of booting through firewire?

    Great episode!

Linh: If you want to run windows from a different hard drive on your mac, try installing grub. The easiest way to do that would be to install ubuntu (just because Ubuntu is so awesome :-)), which would automatically create a startup file listing Ubuntu, Windows, and Mac OSX.

    Cali,
Windows and liberal bashing in one podcast.

  6. Comment by wonderingfellow on April 25, 2007 10:30 pm

Dunno what you mean by all of the Bono bashing, but calling him names doesn’t help. He’s not God, just a person, but they did raise quite a bit of money tonight for a country and people that needs any help that they can get. Would you explain your point of view? I’m not trying to start anything, just wanted to here your opinion.

    Thanks for the great show!

  7. Comment by Reina on April 26, 2007 12:02 am

I love boot camp!! It is pretty cool and not very surprising that XP actually runs better on the Mac than a PC. Ha Ha!! The Bono bashing threw me off but it does kinda bother me when rich people with multiple mansions in different areas around the world ask me to give money. MAN - if they pulled all THEIR resources and finances together they could probably feed and take care of a few small countries. Sorry for the rant.
I love your show - you are awesome Cali!!

Wow the Bono comments were unexpected. The injection of politics into this makes me wonder what Cali and Neil’s overall politcal views are.

  9. Comment by Rob on April 26, 2007 12:07 am

    Cali,

What drives your opinion of Idol Gives Back and Bono. I would really like to understand. My personal opinion, based on discussion with people who have been there, is that the children of Africa have absolutely no recourse or opportunity to change their circumstances without significant outside assistance.

  10. Comment by Cal on April 26, 2007 12:08 am

oh and i just noticed that the links to the large format and the ipod format are the same file i think.

I fast forwarded through most of it, so I didn’t hear what he said, but I agree with your point.

It’s just so boring without Sanjaya!

  12. Comment by Brutis on April 26, 2007 12:46 am

If you’re starving, find a way to change it. It’s not my problem.
You have to strive to reach your goals and disregard any obstacle that keeps you from it.

That might work here in the US where we have freedom
But NOT in 75% of the World where there is NO freedom

You mean they should disregard the Lords Resitance Army or the Janjaweed who kill millions of people just because they want to make a better life for themselfs by growing crops and when the Lords Resitance Army or the Janjaweed comes in and takes it they should stop them how?

perhaps you should take a look at Google Earth Darfur site also known as the
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
    http://www.ushmm.org/googleearth/
and get a feel for whats really going on in Africa
you wont here about it on CNN Or FOX and especially your local news
they dont know what News is anymore
if they cant spin it for there own agenda they dont report it

Waaaait Cali. Vacuum cleaner? Are you sure? I’ve heard that there is the danger of static shock involved in that… I wouldn’t want to fry my computer. Instead one should use a can of air for that, AFAIK.

I think what you mean is something like Red Nose Day or Comic Relief… it really depends what they want to do with the money. Help them build up an infrastructure, schools etc. so that they can actually start helping themself, yes. There’s the chinese proverb… “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Of course one could argue if the US and Europe should be interested in actually helping these countries, as they could become the new China, which might overtake US and Europe.
And who knows if stars aren’t helping… they don’t need to tell everyone.

Other than that I agree with Brutis, it’s hard to help yourself in such situations.

  14. Comment by faridzadeh on April 26, 2007 2:26 am

I normally agree that most people need to push themselves into helping themselves because no one else will help you. But in certain situations where ALL odds are against you, a little help never hurts.

Granted it’s shameful it had to come from American Idol and not something with a little more dignity, but I’m sure the people on the receiving end won’t care.

I’m seriously disappointed to have heard something like this from Cali. It reminds me of my ex, who used to think the system was made to help those who wanted it, until she realized that sometimes you need an extra hand to help you through hard times.

I’m an avid Linux enthusiast, but when it comes to testing my software I have to be able to test it on many platforms. I’ve been using VMWare Viewer (a virtual machine) for quite some time and have come to find it irreplaceable. VMWare Viewer comes in a Linux, Windows, and yes… an OS X flavor. The OS X version of VMWare Viewer is called Fusion and has only recently been released. VMWare (the company) is a very forward thinking company and has great products. The VMWare Viewer is free and very powerful and robust. I can install any operating system and software with only a little effort. There is a growing community that loves to help and plenty of sites to utilize.

VMWare Viewer would be an excellent tool to test application quick and easy, try out a new operating system, or see what all the excitement is over the Linux revolution (Microsoft gave you Windows TM, Linux gives you the whole house! :D)

Check out an interview at Macworld 2007 - Show Floor Showoff with Pat the product manager for Fusion (22nd Jan 2007)

Ha, I loved the “coffee involved” overlay - and the French Maid TV reference was hilarious!

As a PC person, I have to admit I’m amazed by how clean the Mac insides look! Is there any PC case that’d make it similarly perfect?

PS: First-time commenter; been watching the show for a couple of weeks (possibly months) now, and it’s become my absolute favorite!

I never realized how selfish and self centered you can be. I have even emailed you with support when some one else criticized you for the way you hosted your show, maybe I should have just pointed out that it was “not my problem”.

So when the next disaster hits America will you still say “It’s not my problem” or would that change if you were in the middle of it? Next you will be telling that everyone should carry a gun so we would not have random shootings.

Cali made the number one mistake for podcasters…never admit your a conservative, or you will be cut off at the knees as the libs have the majority of the web 2.0/podcast world.

It’s funny that I said the same thing to my wife when Bono graced the stage for the idol contestants to kiss his holy ring.

As kadajawi mentioned, never vacuum the inside of your computer! It can build up a lot of static, which may damage some components. Compressed air is the way to go.

Just found your show today, watched a bunch of them already, diggin it!
    keep ‘em coming.

A.I. was dull to begin with, but I really didn’t expect them to do anything this pathetic for another few years, but yes they have “jumped the shark”… albeit a premature shark jumping.
It is good to help a neighbor that needs a hand up, but it’s pretty poor form to publicize about just HOW MUCH you are giving…. oh, wait.. excuse me I was thinking that the people on A.I. have “morals” or “values”… my bad, those were sold off with that old nasty “self respect” thing long ago.

bono - another rock star that’s even more famous in his head than he is in real life.

    … btw… to Garry Benfold….
if people had guns then the death count on campus would have been lower last week. It’s a lot easier/safer to shoot fish in a barrel if they aren’t shooting back.
It was a terrible tragedy, but No law can ever stop that from happening.
Think of it this way, there are already specific laws which say “you can’t carry a gun” on that campus, lots of good that law did. What would you have done in that situation? Wave a law book in the shooters face in hopes that they will realize what they are doing is wrong? Wouldn’t do any good because the shooter already knows that what (s)he is doing is against the law.

You can’t stop random people from breaking the law.
But you can prepare yourself, just as it says in the Second Amendment. It won’t ever stop the random shootings, but it will lower the death count.

I fully support the idea of training and arming the teachers at every school, er well, at least the ones that are mentally stable.

    Oh look an Opinion!

Guys, it’s your podcast. It has your names on it. And certainly the temptation is always there to use your outlet for your views, regardless of whether they are part of the original concept.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t have an opinion. Please, have opinions! It’s the differences between us all that makes this great.

However, you have multiple outlets for that opinion. Maybe next time, post your opinion on your forum, mention the post in the podcast. You’ll get some very honest feedback that way.

Be conservative. Be liberal. Be an existential druid if you like. Don’t kick yourself over it. We still have the right to free speech.

    Hi Cali
i just downloaded this episode via iTunes (large format)… and it was 113MB … the large format here is only 33MB …. the resolution and bitrate on the itunes download one are far too high for my laptop or xbox to handle (just like a previous episode a while ago)

    Thanks Gary

Cali, your initial assessment of American Idol was correct. It should have been called American Idol’s Audience gives back, yes the show donated $5 million, but do you know how much revenue American Idol generates per show? $5 million is drop in the bucket, they could have done a lot better. And Oprah is a fool; do you know how many underprivileged kids we have in the US? Why did she have to go to Africa? My 2 cents and my very own opinion.

  29. Comment by Cali on April 26, 2007 10:10 am

@”iluvgeekbrief”: It’s Oprah’s personal money, so she can do whatever charity she wants to do. I’m not disagreeing with you, I just see a distinction.

  30. Comment by Jason on April 26, 2007 10:22 am

Anyone who stops watching the show because they now think you are a conservative, liberatarian etc is an idiot. So you have opinions, we all do. If I stopped talking to people I know/love because I disagreed with their view on whatever topic I wouldn’t have many friends or family left. Hell, having disagreements is probably what keeps the bond so strong.

That said, let’s get back to tech news and general geekery, leave the politics and debates for another venue ;)

  31. Comment by Ben @ Parallels on April 26, 2007 12:00 pm

    Cali -

Great video, but I’m a bit sad that you chose to work with Boot Camp over Parallels to run Vista. :(

Let me know when you want to take a deeper look at Parallels and I’ll hook you up with a review copy. And, we’ve got a new version coming soon that has some REALLY cool new stuff!

    Cheers,
    Ben @ Parallels
    brudolph@parallels.com

  32. Comment by Linh on April 26, 2007 1:11 pm

@Prostr8: yeah, parallels can use the boot camp partition to run within OS X. I have not tried it myself, but plan on it soon. Just don’t know if I should install Vista or XP .. I actually need both.. ha. Which is why a mac pro would be nice, but it’s far too expensive. I already have one external drive, I don’t want two more.

@fluffman86: I have an iMac, and didn’t want a stack of external drives. Hence my comments.

  33. Comment by Damian on April 26, 2007 4:23 pm

YOU HAD TO SET THE CLOCK? I thought you said you had OSX on there. does Vista not see that your computer’s clock is already set? Or should i now be asking if Vista keeps a different timeclock than OSX? How Strange!!!

  34. Comment by Jeremy G. on April 26, 2007 6:29 pm

I’m reminded of growing up in a relatively small town where my parents were the only Libertarians. I’d go with them when they voted (wasn’t old enough myself) and the old lady who collected the signatures and passed out the ballots would always make note, in a very loud voice, that the Libertarians had arrived! I’ll never forget that. :)

  35. Comment by cowboyeagle on April 26, 2007 8:24 pm

What classification of Vista did you install Cali? Inquiring minds want to known since only certain higher levels are aloud to be installed on bootcamp right? or is that only with Parallels or maybe both or just one? Anyone? Anyone?

  36. Comment by Cali on April 26, 2007 10:05 pm

@cowboyeagle: Vista Home Premium. Bootcamp works with XP, Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, and Ultimate. It looks like Parallels works on all versions of Vista. It looks like I might be reviewing Parallels, so I’ll make sure. :)

  37. Comment by Ciotóg on April 27, 2007 12:47 am

You could also try out the beta of VMware Fusion, the beta is currently free but I don’t think the graphics are as good as Parallels (I tried the demo quite sometime back).

    Hello Cali,
    I just watched episode #159.
Shouldn’t you disconnect the power supply before opening the Mac?
It might be a little safer to avoid that fatal static shock for the user ;-)

    As always - great show.

    Greetings from Germany
    Christian

  39. Comment by Cali on April 27, 2007 7:49 am

Of course it was disconnected! :) On the Mac Pro, though, it doesn’t disconnect from the back of the computer, so it just hangs.

  40. Comment by Mike on April 28, 2007 12:00 am

Holy schnikies… i had no idea Macs were that easy to install hard drives…

As for the comment to clean out the dusts etc, while the system is open… generally we use an electric yard leaf blower ;)

  41. Comment by Michael Bailey on April 28, 2007 7:10 am

When American Idol received 38 million votes, you know that must have made at least $15 million from the cell-phone company (re: txt messages).

Why don’t they just use that money to make a difference?

Parallels may work on all against of Vista, but it is against the Vista EULA to run Home Basic/Premium under virtualization, you must run Business or Ultimate under Parallels.
