I’m pretty sure that black strip on the bottom of the iPhone was there in the original demo from January. But I’m all for speculation about a replaceable battery. Or maybe upgradable flash memory!

I can’t believe that I’m finally submitting to all the hype by spending so much time on this (and sorry for the double post), but here’s a pic from the Jan. kenynote where you can see the black bar on the bottom. I think I remember reading back then that it was needed for reception cause the materials for the rest of the phone weren’t conductive to a good signal.

Yeah Shawn you’re right the black part of the phone is where the internal antenna is located.

I’m thinking that it’s either an IR transciever or a RF transciever (like the Apple remote)…Maybe a way to control Front Row or your whole Mac with the iPhone…hmmm

The black thingy is a piece of tape holding the iPhone together.

  7. Comment by Chris (Australia) on June 21, 2007 6:08 am

The black strip, I hope is a RF transciever as suggested by JD.

Otherwise, my vote is a removable battery ;)

Can’t help but commenting. Your podcast is a highlight to my tech day, but two items..
    1) don’t turn you back to the camera that long, I stopped looking at the demo screen and started trying to count grey hairs on your head. (eg. distracting)
and 2) that rug clock is a neat idea, but I saw this one that sounded better http://www.nandahome.com/ called “clocky” the alarm clock that runs away. you not only have to get out of bed, but have to catch the thing to turn off the alarm.

Apple had to use plastic on the iPhone so it could recieve radio signals well. So the only question is the design choice of black for the plastic part.

Keep doing what you do…it works well. Also, Neil, it’s good that you let Cali always open the new toys…she turns it into a very entertaining experience. Enjoy you guys!

seems the little black thing on the iphone is just a design feature, allows for the mic and speaker at the bottom of the phone, i watched the guided tour, its my best guess

I’m thinking this “removable” section (most likely the battery) provides access to insert a sim card.
