We shot this Brief as I was driving through north Washington state. It was too rainy to get out and shoot a regular Brief, so I decided to review the Navicore Navkit GPS system. It works with the N800 and certain Nokia phones. Overall, I love it and it’s a great device, but there are three things about it that drive me crazy every time we take a trip. That’s what this Brief is about.

wowow cali don’t crash, if you had crash what would you say to the police “erm i was doing a podcast” lol

  2. Comment by Cal on August 8, 2007 4:39 am

woah pull over to podcast! or keep your eyes on the road!

  3. Comment by Bob Cozzi on August 8, 2007 5:38 am

You weren’t endangering _your_ lives, you were endangering the lives of those driving nearby.

I love your show, but grow up girl, holding the wheel with at least 1 hand is required. What you were doing was irresponsible at best.

  4. Comment by Asa on August 8, 2007 6:13 am

Wow Bob, did you see her swerving all over the road the second her hands left the wheel?

Neither did I. If your car does these things you may need an alignment.

  5. Comment by Capn Scott on August 8, 2007 7:30 am

Don’t normally watch the bloopers, but the bing and “Oh no, We’re out of gas” was totally unexpected. Though, I’m now cleaning the coffee out of my keyboard. Freakin Hilarious!

oooo podcasting while driving. What would Matt Lauer say!?

  7. Comment by burninhigh on August 8, 2007 9:37 am

You look to be driving very well to me. True it may not be the best thing in the world to do, but everyone talks to someone while driving. Some even talk on the phone. I’m sure some who are bashing are in the pile. Keep casting, Love your work. I do agree about keeping one hand on the wheel. NO KNEE DRIVING!!

  8. Comment by Concerned Viewer on August 8, 2007 10:07 am

CAREFULL. We are not giving the best example or cautious driving to others when we do a Podcast behind the wheel looking at the camera and not the road.

  9. Comment by Capn Scott on August 8, 2007 11:35 am

Maybe you should have put the disclaimer in the beginning, of, “Don’t try this at home folks, I’m a professional”… Still laughing about the “out of gas” comment…

Please do not film and drive at the same time thats asking for trouble.

  11. Comment by Lee on August 8, 2007 11:47 am

I found it hard to focus on the content. Scariest video I’ve ever seen, especially when you’re gesturing with both hands off the wheel, you’re looking into the camera, and the big RV whooshes by.

And you say it was raining? So the roads were wet?

From now on I’ll pay close attention when you pre-announce a road trip; I was in Seattle earlier this week. A mashup with a map of your route and rough dates/times would allow us subscribers to avoid those roads. :-)

Was Neal able to film and wear his seatbelt at the same time?

“This is Cali Lewis, coming to you from the Xtreme Podcasting Games X, …”

  12. Comment by Kam on August 8, 2007 12:18 pm

Was that you putting on makeup as I drove by? I’ve heard of muilti tasking but that’s pushing it a little too far. As I see by the above comments, little attention was paid to what you had to say. We were more concerned about you crashing, then what would we do. I guess you could do a brief from your hospital bed!
Next time let Neal drive, he can keep one eyer on the road & the other in the viewfinder.

  13. Comment by R Pyle on August 8, 2007 12:21 pm

I won’t even look at my guy when we’re conversing while I drive. Yes, this was scary, but you’ve heard that enough.

You know what will tell you if there’s a dog friendly motel nearby? Your iPhone!
    So there’s your next iCali.

  14. Comment by Lloyd on August 8, 2007 12:24 pm

I was so nervous watching this latest podcast. You scared the ….. out of me. Please, please, promise you will not do that again. I want to see you alive when you pass through Portland.

  15. Comment by Troy from Sarasota on August 8, 2007 12:28 pm

Your previous podcast in the middle of know where was creative and different enough for me.

But, this podcast was irresponsible and childish. For a moment I thought I was watching a pop tart like Spears, Lohan, or Hilton…

I am surprised no one took down your tag number and reported you…

Please don’t do this in a few days when you’re taking care of your Nephew…

  16. Comment by Richie K on August 8, 2007 12:57 pm

Wow. Talk about the most irresponsible public display of driving that I have seen recently. Frankly it was despicable behaviour and I think all your fans deserve better.

Next time, STOP THE CAR. You are just lucky you didn’t cause a collision. Please remember that driving is a privilege, not a right. Act accordingly.

  17. Comment by TheBiblioholic on August 8, 2007 1:45 pm

I like your podcast but what you did this time was very irresponsible. Recording a podcast, waving devices at the camera, taking BOTH hands off the steering wheel, getting distracted, not keeping your eyes on the road is just plain dumb. You endangered yourselves and others on the road, and set a very bad example. Yes there are laws about not using a handheld cell phone while driving, and those laws are stupid, because it isn’t specifically a cell phone that’s the problem it is driving dangerously while distracted that is a problem, and that’s true with other gadgets as well as conversations with other passengers. As a licensed driver you have a responsibility to drive in a safe and responsible manner, respecting laws and the lives and properties of others around you.

Next time, pull over, give us an interesting background instead. I was so distracted by your antics I didn’t even absorb what you were nattering on about.

  18. Comment by Paul on August 8, 2007 2:04 pm

I agree with all the comments above.
Some days this show is very professional and entertaining, and other days it just reeks of amateurism. I think you’re better than this. THINK.

  19. Comment by Lloyd on August 8, 2007 2:20 pm

He folks, don’t be so mean. Cut her some slack. I’m sure she learned a lesson.

  20. Comment by TheBiblioholic on August 8, 2007 2:43 pm

    @Lloyd

However many critical or “mean” comments she gets here, it is a whole lot less traumatic than the potentially life-long (or life-ending) repercussions and regret if an accident had occured.

And even if she learns her lessons from these comments, at least one commenter above doesn’t seem to think there’s anything wrong with no hands driving while podcasting, since apparently the car’s alignment was ok and didn’t swerve all over the place. So there’s value in driving the point home (no pun intended) that this was uncool.

  21. Comment by skunkman62 on August 8, 2007 2:54 pm

driving while doing a podcast? i always thought you were a bubble head, this episode proved it. just plain stupid.

  22. Comment by Red Leaf? on August 8, 2007 3:23 pm

Did anyone else notice the red leaf? What was being covered up?

Also does anyone know what kind of car that was? Just curious.

  23. Comment by Techbugtv on August 8, 2007 3:38 pm

Random..but what kind of car are you driving?

  24. Comment by Red Leaf? on August 8, 2007 3:50 pm

I don’t think it is random seeing as how they were doing the show from the car.

I am a bit of a car nut so I am just curious about these things.

  25. Comment by Bill on August 8, 2007 4:17 pm

Wow, what a bunch of back seat nannies! I see people driving far worse than Cali. I’ve driven that same road dozens of times and I noticed she was actually the slowest car on the road. You KNOW you’re going slow when a RV passes you.

Taking your hands off the wheel for brief periods of time is no more dangerous than riding a bike with no hands.

But then I suppose that all the people who posted here telling her off, have never done anything wrong, ever. Nope, not even once. Uh huh.

  26. Comment by iPenis on August 8, 2007 4:38 pm

Stop picking on Cali; she just got her license! Call me crazy but I loved the suspense of this episode and look foward to more extreme podcasting! Next time let the dogs drive! Or do a show while skydiving! How about from within a pit of snakes? But there must also be the danger of spectator injury…humm…how about podcasting while flying a plane in an air show… without a pilot’s license! Yeah!

  27. Comment by jaffarkelshac on August 8, 2007 5:14 pm

I think the overall tone is a precaution, I if I did not know it was pre-recorded I would have thought they would crash.
We don’t want you to endanger yourself.

  28. Comment by Julian Elischer on August 8, 2007 5:20 pm

PUT YOUR HANDS BACK ON THE WHEEL DAMMIT!

  29. Comment by iPenis on August 8, 2007 5:25 pm

I know what kind of car it is. It’s the new Apple iCar that drives itself.

  30. Comment by TheBiblioholic on August 8, 2007 6:09 pm

    @Bill

Slowest car on the road, slower than an RV, making an RV have to switch to a faster lane to pass you because you’re too distracted to drive at normal highway speeds is safe? In rainy road conditions? Many an accident or case of road rage is caused by someone driving unusually slowly and forcing everyone else to get frustrated and wildy maneuver around you, cutting each other off, etc. Not that I am accusing Cali of driving that slow, just pointing out that “slowest car on the road” doesn’t mean “safest car on the road”.

Yes, there are lots of people driving far worse than Cali. That doesn’t make her documented lapse of judgement any less dangerous or defensible.

  31. Comment by Jim Seybert on August 8, 2007 6:19 pm

YIKES - I recall a story about someone suggesting those who’ve never done something stupid while driving should throw the first stone. There certainly are a lot of stone-throwers amongst us.

That said - A broadcast should be judged on content and its ability to compel the viewer.

This one, sadly, did not. Could have been the devices, the delivery, or the aforementioned safety issues.

Nonetheless, I didn’t make it through to the end and am glad to hear that it did not finish with a crash.

  32. Comment by guest on August 8, 2007 6:59 pm

Lighten up all. That’s just how us Italians drive. Trust me….

  33. Comment by B on August 8, 2007 7:03 pm

It would have been cool if you just kept your hands on the wheel, and your eyes on the road the WHOLE time!

  34. Comment by inkman on August 8, 2007 9:39 pm

I see it’s a Cadillac from the medallion on the steering wheel but what I’d like to know is what you used to light yourself inside the car.

  35. Comment by Cali on August 8, 2007 9:56 pm

I’ve listened to audio podcasts forever that were recorded while the podcaster was driving. There’s a famous story where Adam Curry was driving in the Netherlands recording a podcast and a guy pulls up beside him who’s listening to an earlier Adam Curry podcast. To me it didn’t seem any different than what those guys do. We were probably both paying more attention to the road while we were shooting this than we normally do. I would have talked much more smoothly if I wasn’t so focused on the road. :)

For those who asked, it’s a Cadillac…something like SVS…that’s probably not right. Hotwire should sponsor GB because we rented the car for a whole month for less than it would cost to fly.

  37. Comment by Richie K on August 8, 2007 10:20 pm

Just because you have others have previously done something idiotic does not make it right. Thousands of people have lost their lives due to collisions caused by distracted drivers (and I knew one such unlucky soul personally), so please do not try and justify your irresponsible actions. Your cavalier attitude towards this is disconcerting and disappointing.

  38. Comment by Eric on August 8, 2007 10:24 pm

Please don’t shoot video podcasts while driving, it is irresponsible and possibly illegal. Shame on you for not knowing better.

“Washington state bans text messaging, cell phone use while driving: But drivers can only be cited for the law if stopped for another traffic violation”

    Eric

  39. Comment by Penguins on August 9, 2007 12:22 am

Guys, this is not that bad. She was paying more attention to the road than most people do. This is defiantly not worse than those of you (myself included) who change the AC settings or adjust your mirrors or fiddle with the radio. Give it a rest.

Also, we have to find out what the leaf was covering, please tell us, we are curious beings!

  40. Comment by dorkmunder on August 9, 2007 1:42 am

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess the ref leaf indicated they had crossed over into Canada.

The video of the little LCD light is cool but I gotta say having it shining in your eye while driving just added to the unsafe nature of the day.

  41. Comment by TheBiblioholic on August 9, 2007 1:56 am

    Cali,

Your response is far more disappointing than the initial irresponsible action. To not acknowledge that you made a stupid mistake by trying to cite other bad examples as justification for your actions is surprisingly immature. Clearly you do not appreciate the potentially serious repercussions of your actions. A simple mea culpa could have put this issue to rest with little loss of face, and some good public awareness raising as a side effect. Oh well.

  42. Comment by Daniel on August 9, 2007 7:54 am

If you are so stupid that you don’t even believe that shooting a video podcast while driving is dangerous, then I can’t keep supporting your podcast by listening. People die on the highways everyday, your lack of respect is disgusting.

  43. Comment by R Pyle on August 9, 2007 9:55 am

    Wow.

    @Cali, who said:
    > I’ve listened to audio podcasts forever
    > that were recorded while the podcaster
    > was driving. … To me it didn’t seem
    > any different than what those guys do.

It was, though, and the biggest difference being that in an audio podcast, you don’t have to handle devices and show them to the camera.

All you have to do in an audio podcast is talk. The rest is post.

I’m not going to say any more about this, but please just take it in this spirit: We know you’re aware of your place in heaven, we just don’t want you getting there any quicker than need be.

  44. Comment by Cali on August 9, 2007 10:14 am

Relax, Guys! I understand how everyone thinks I was nonchalant with my answer, and maybe I should have made it clearer. It wasn’t the safest way to drive, no, but I know EXACTLY how careful I was being. We were BOTH watching the road and I stayed 20 car lengths behind the car in front of me.

I guess I’m going to have to get used to people telling me they’re going to stop watching if I make a mistake because I don’t ever expect to make ONLY wise, perfect choices in my life.

  45. Comment by IAmYourDensity on August 9, 2007 4:03 pm

Even impaired drivers THINK they are driving OK. Realizing that you did a dumb thing, apologizing, and promising to not do it again would probably win back your fans rather that this sarcastic, patronizing tone. People on this board bend over backwards for you the way you Appletologysts bend over for Steve Jobs, so when so many fans have such a strong negative reaction, reassessing your stand might be in order.

  47. Comment by OHMYGOD on August 9, 2007 5:59 pm

IF the stearing wheel were a murder victim, Cali would have gotten away with the crime. The police would not be able to find ANY finger prints on that steering wheel.

  48. Comment by Bruce on August 10, 2007 10:12 am

    Hi Cali,

You drove fine. I read the comments before I looked at the video and expected to see a horror show of swerving. It is obvious you were paying attention to the road and driving very steady.

    Keep up the good work.

    - Bruce

    Ciao Cali!!

You had enough flak almost from everybody, what I must say your lucky your lucky you don’t live in Canada. If insurance provider saw your vidcast , they would raise your insurance premiums with justification.

We all make judgement calls which isn’t wise one at that time. We are all humans after all. Keep it up good work!

Take care…yes we care about you!

You mentioned that the gps you like the most is the tom tom go 910. I don’t see a way to search your site to see if you had a video podcast where you reviewed the tom tom go 910.
I’m in the market for a gps and would appreciate your thoughts.

Love GeekBrief, but #208 was the most irresponsible journalism I’ve seen in forever! Not the reporting, but the driving while podcasting.

Never, ever again please! For the sake of those you may have killed.

  56. Comment by Joe Dolan on August 23, 2007 10:22 am

Is the Navicore Navkit the only GPS add-on that will work with the n800? The price seemed high compared to other kits that most people use to add GPS to their laptops, phones, pdas, etc.

    Thanks,
