Update on My Medical Issue

This is an update with what’s going on with me physically. I’ve gone to see an Internist (Internal Medicine). They’re doing a lot of tests to see what’s going on with my hands, feet, knees and elbows. I’m taking medication to deal with the itchiness, but it keeps me knocked out most of the time. Neal wanted me to give you guys an update, so here it is.
BTW, PodShow is putting ridiculous pre-roll adds on the front of audio posts. We don’t get paid for those so please ignore them. I guess they’ve gone in a different direction than their original plan.
UPDATE (12:27 PM): Cali is sleeping, but she’s reading comments everytime she wakes up. The drowsy effect from Atarax is very strong for her. I have some great bloopers in the can, so I’m working on a blooper show. (Neal)
UPDATE (9:45 PM): My lips are swollen so big, it’s like Angelina Jolie with a collagen injection. :)

Hey Cali,
I hope you feel better really soon…maybe it’ll all go away super fast!
Frank
Hope you feel better soon. At least it’s a good opportunity to catch up on some movies and tv…?
Hi Cali,
Take care of yourself and don’t rush back. Hope you feel better soon.
Take care,
/Tom
Vicodin isnt really additive
its just that drug addicts will abuse it
like any pain Med
Ive had a priscrption for Vicodin for a neck injury for a very long time and I can go a month or more without taking any and dont feel any need or want to take one unless im in pain
of course everyone reacts differently to drugs
this is just my experience with Vicodin
Get better soon we are all praying for ya. Keep your spirits up. Don’t worry make Neal your slave its his job.
Take care of yourself. We’ll all be here when you’re back to your normal self. Stay positive!
Praying for you lady. Hang in there.
Whenever I hear crazy stuff like this it turns out to be a parasite. Especially after traveling…
I hope you get to felling better. Remember there is nothing that can’t be made better by BBQ….. Need anything - Let me know.

Continue taking care of yourself. Don’t come back too soon and whatever you do… don’t dress up William the Intern and put him on in your place :-)
Hand Foot and Mouth runs rampant through day cares, so the infection may have come from your nephew. Odd thing about kids, while they’re building their little immune systems they’re wreaking havoc with ours. And then they stand there looking cute so you can’t be mad at them.
It does run its course, though. I mean that to be comforting; this too shall pass. Hang in there.
From one podcaster to another who just got over a “mystery illness”. Take you time, get better, we’ll all be here when you get back.
Get well soon.

I hope you get better, Cali.
Sorry to hear you’re ill, Cali.
Take good care of yourself and here’s hoping you have a speedy recovery. Don’t worry, the Internet and your loyal viewers will still be here when you get better. :-)
As another admirer stated, “Enjoy your recovery”.

Hi Cali and Neal,
Your in our thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself and take time to recover. We will all definitly be here when you get back.
Maybe you should have Patricia Curry send some of her magic soup :)
Take care,
Mark
Cali/Neal,
If it’s the hand-foot-and-mouth thing my daughter had that when she was 2 years old (on her 2nd birthday actually). Symptoms sound very similar to yours.
Not really too serious but apparently mighty contagious - she had to stay away from preschool for 2 weeks.
On that note: watch out, Neal, you’ll be next!
Keep up the good work.
Ed (New Zealand)
Hi cali and neal,
I hope you get better soon.
Esteban (guatemala)
Cali,
I recommend taking the pain meds if you need them at all. Unless you have a known problem with addiction (in which case the Doc shouldn’t have prescribed them), they are perfectly safe to take. Especially for a week or two. They may really help you get through this more comfortably. Have Neil put an auto-responder on your email while you chill out and listen to some audiobooks and watch some movies. Forget the outside world for a while. You deserve it.
Neal,
I am sure that everything will turn out OK. If Cali still has to continue wearing gloves, your mission is to find some cartoon type gloves so that Cali will think that she is in Roger Rabbitt.
Cali,
Get lots of rest and I hope that you will be back soon. Perhaps Neal can prepare some “Best of” and “Blooper” episodes for your hiatus.
All the best,
Pierre B. (Montréal)
Gee…that really sucks. I wish that y’all weren’t having to go through all this. My kids and I will be praying for you. I’m in the area, so email me if I can do anything for you.
-Paul
Cali,
I hope you get better really soon, but hope you dont come back until you are completely well.
Take care,
James ( Vancouver )
Rest and get better, Cali. Enjoy that sleep you’ve been managing without. We’ll all be thinking about you and we’ll be here to welcome you back when you’re ready.
Take care,
Dave (Seattle)
Hi Cali,
So sorry to hear this update - I hope you will recover really soon - just hang on to that great mood of yours (I know it is hard when there is something wrong with you) - but I am sure your always positive spirit will help you to a speedy recovery.
Get some rest and get well - don’t forget to enjoy that Neal is doing everything for you at the moment :-)
In the meantime we will all be here waiting for you to return when you are ready.
All the best
Klaus

Dr. House would say: “It had to do with your trip, you may have drank or eaten something that could’ve gotten into your system and laid dormant until you heard the announcement of the iPhone dropping price, in which case, the stress induced iPhonitis activated and has temporarily released spores in your hands and feet, thus immobilizing you to not use your iPhone. This is a psychological condition, that has manifested as physical in order to rebel against Steve Jobs’ shocking announcement…”
Dr House’s cure: “Get the refund, and your psychological issue with the drop should clear your physical symptoms.”
— I need to stop watching tv… *sigh*
Cali,
I have been a long time fan, and to be honest, I hope you take a week off, or a month off from doing the G.Brief. Technology will still be here, and we need your quirkiness to show us more tech stuff, but as long as you are healthy. We fans wont leave ya. Feel better!
-Z
EEK! Here I was secretly hoping it was the polymers indigenous to all things Apple. But it sounds a tad more serious than that.
Keep your spirits up girl, and I’ll keep you in my prayers till this passes.
Cali,
Take care and get well soon. I had a mouth virus years ago, and couldn’t eat solid food for 7 days. Make Neil take care of you! Get Well soon.
Patrick
aka golfstud
Sounds like a mild case of neuropathy. If the itchiness is symmetrical you might ask about fibromyalgia
Will miss the show a lot whlie You are recovering, BUT Your health is more important than anything else right now, so You just rest and get well and keep in mind that You have people all over the world thinking about You and hoping for You to get better!
With love from Sweden
Peter
It seems to be hand-foot-and-mouth disease, caused by a coxsackievirus.
Good news: It has a good prognosis.
Bad news: There’s no specific treatment (other than symptomatic and resignation…).
Worts news: Yo may go about 7 to 10 days with the blistering thing on your mouth.
Take care and get well soon !!!!
Get well soon, Cali!
Hey Cali!
I hope you get well soon!
Greetings from Bremen, Germany.
Joachim (a fan & fellow podcaster)
Take the time off, hopefully you won’t have gloves when you come back on. Take care, get well.
Get well soon Cali, but *take some time off* and don’t stress about the Brief.
We’ll all be here when you’re better. :)
Cali,
I do hope you get to feeling better very soon. I am a ‘new’ podcast viewer (found your shows about a week ago) and enjoy your informative programs very much - watched from #1! Hope that the doctor’s can figure out what is going on and provide a treatment plan which gets you back to improved health ASAP. My prayers go out for you and Neal as well. A fan from Florida.
Cali,
Sorry to hear you are ill…. but even dealing with your illness, you still have that upbeat attitude that we know and love. BTW, you sport the gloves well!
A lot of podcasters getting mystery illnesses… I better go wash my hands & take some vitamins, just to be on the safe side
Take good care of her Neal..
your friend,
- jonathan
Hope you’re feeling better soon…I enjoy your podcasts very much.
What if it turns out you’re allergic to Apple products? What WILL you DO???
Take care…:-)
get better Cali… doesn’t sound like fun….
and yeah… the audio prerolls are a litle bugging… having to listen to a 30 second spot from Jerome Bettis before a techshow… yuck
Oh wow now you name it I can find it and surprise surprise wasn’t this after you looked after your Nephew ? Speaking as a father of a 3yr old its amazing the stuff you start catching when you have a child around.

Hello Cali
I hope you get better soon
cant wait to see the next show
cya Konrad from Austria
Cali,
I know that this infection is highly contagious but it sounded like Neal recorded the podcast with you over Skype?
When you first mentioned about the gloves I thought you were sounding a little “off par”.
We’re all still subscribed and will wait patiently until you are 100% better.
Get well soon.
Darren
Hey I hope they figure it out soon. I said this back on the Ustream chat but I did have a similar problem that healed over time so I hope the same happens.
About the Podshow ads though, that seems pretty intrusive in the same vein as the RSS feed hijack they did awhile back. Definitely complain.
Hi Cali,
I hope you get well really soon. I really love your show, and I can’t wait to see GBTV #230!
Hey Cali,
wish you a speedy recovery. I watch your podcast every day. All the best!
Chris
Hi Cali,
I´m wiriting from Germany and your health problem seems to have a name: PSORIASIS
No medicine, no stress.
All the best for you!
hi cali,
hope you feel better soon ! take all the time you need to get better, it’s more important !!
all the best,
tom
Hey Cali,
Feel better soon. Thank you for the work you put into bringing out your show. You are thought of and missed!
Sincerely,

hey cali,
wish you all the best,
get well soon!
greetings from austria
Get better! We love you guys!
Take it easy, watch tv, drink milkshakes/eat ice cream/no stress. :-)
so for now is it shiny, itchy, tech news?
Sorry to make light of the situation. Laughter is the best medicine they say.
Get Well Soon!
Scratch ya later,
Mark
Best of Luck Cali!
With any luck this thing will run it’s course and your immune system will get ya back to normal.
Get Well!
Josh
I am no doctor, but it does possibly sound like psoriasis as Mike suggested. I have a friend who has that particular condition. Except I’ve never heard that looking the way you describe your current condition but I’ve also never seen it in a heightened state.
I’ve never written a comment or on the forum, but just wanted to send my wishes for your speedy and pain-free recovery.
best wishes Cali - the worse thing has got to be when no one knows what it is - anyways, get well soon
Hope you get better soon!
I`m praying for you!
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Vicodin is awesome
Get well soon,God Bless A Canadian Fan
My daughters and wife had hand, foot, and mouth disease a couple years ago. Freaky disease; you never hear about it, either, until someone you know has it. My wife didn’t get the hand blisters, but she had the dry, painful throat and mouth thing for a couple days that wasn’t any fun. Our daughters had sores all over the outsides of their mouths. Yikes! And why can’t they come up with a better name for this disease? Its descriptive, yes, but it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Hope you feel better soon.
Hey Cali! We love you in England and want you to get better soon. Fight those bug(ger)s!
John x
Hey Cali,
Hope the condition goes away soon - as plenty of others have said - dont rush back to work.
Maybe this is time for Neal to loose his inhibitions and get in front of the camera for a while while you take a well earned rest.
David
Hello,
My sister had a similar condition that took over a year to finally diagnose. She suffered, too. In the end, it was diagnosed as lichen planus. Google it, you will find that it matches many of your symptoms. I don’t advocate self-diagnosis, but maybe you could mention it to your doctor.
I hope you are able to resolve this soon. You are much loved and watched by many.
sincerely,
Shari
i will keep you in my prayers and look forward to your beeing back to great health soon..
thank you so much for this podcast cali. your show was one of the first i subscribed to when i got my mac and i’ve been watching since the high 30s. I hope you get better very quickly. we’re going to need to get you some michael jackson gloves! sparkly sparkly! :)
Hi Cali,
One, get better!
Two, I’ll be in Dallas next week. Please don’t breathe on me. :-)
Three, yeah, get better!
John
I’m sure everyone is concerned and hoping you get better fast.
Best wishes Cali, take care of yourself.

Launch SaveCali.com!!!
Cali get well soon, the whole tech community needs you. :)
Hi Cali,
I know everyone is thinking of you and hoping you get well soon — being sick sucks!
I’m glad you’ve found what sounds like a good internist. I encourage you to be active in your managing your healthcare, especially if you aren’t cured soon. The number of iatrogenic diseases in the US is amazing. So maybe you could treat it like “medical detente” — trust but verify — because no one cares more about solving your health problems than you and Neil.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and permanent cure!!! :-)
glad you kept us up to date. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Hate those new ads :(
REALLY ANNOYING voice-overs. Grrrr. I’ll never use podshow for any of my clients.
My favorite work of art is sick =0(, I hope you get all better Cali.
Hopefully your doc will figure it out and you’ll be back on the road to recovery.
As for the itching also make sure it’s not caused by any change in something like laundry detergent. I had a serious case of itchy hands and feet and couldn’t figure it out for over a month. I wrote a review of a a Tide product here that caused it: http://tinyurl.com/yqyvcn I kept washing my hands, but drying them with those darn towels, so that’s why I couldn’t figure it out.
Since you once said on your podcast you’re Italian and use your hands a lot while talking this must be doubly tough.
Rest and get well.
Amazing to look at this outpouring of support. I have to concur that your health comes first and we will all still be here when you get back.
As a subscriber from the Dallas area, I am sure that I speak for many of your local fans that if you need anything, send out the word and the cavalry will come charging to the rescue.
Get well soon…
Chris
PS the price-drop induced iPhoneitis posting was a riot. My sister-in-law bought one less then a week before the drop… ouch.
Cali, maybe you have this!
http://www.theindychannel.com/health/14113765/detail.html
@ everyone, thanks so much for all the well wishes!
@ Daz71, Cali wasn’t on Skype. She was just drowsy and wasn’t pushing enough audio at the mic, so the gate was up too high.
@ John, thanks for that link! I forwarded it on to Cali’s Doctor. This started after a bite she got in Oregon. You can actually see the bite on the last several briefs. It’s on her right arm just under her sleeve.
Luria! Get better soon, sounds a lot like Foot & Mouth disease here that the er… animals are getting here in the UK! I had something that sounds a little bit like what you’ve got, ended up having a miserable week and all got better afterwards, hope it’s the same for you! Best wishes,
T
Yikes! I’ll say a prayer for you! :)
Hey Cali,
Get well soon,
Hugz from sunny Luxembourg,
Fernando
Sounds like you have what I had many years ago. Your description of symptoms sounds the same.
With me it manifested in swollen face (I looked like Mr. Magoo!) and other parts of my body, and extreme itchiness/tenderness — scratching the itch was actually extremely painful.
I think the only thing I was prescribed was calamine lotion, but I could be wrong. It was a long time ago, but I’ll never forget it because of the way I looked. I have b&w pics to prove it.
Anyways, I sincerely hope it’s not anything more serious than that — I recovered completely in a bit over a week.
Take this opportunity to have a good relax, and think about anything *but* work.
Many hugs,
Moochie (in Australia)
Get well soon Cali!
Nathaniel
Cali .. I sure hope you feel better soon. It sounds awful what you have. That audio podcast you published was very personal and touching. You and Neil keep up the good work and get well soon.
I’m sure all the love and support of your friends, family, and fans will help you to get well soon!!! You’re in our prayers.
Cali…hope you feel better soon. Hang in there.
Sorry to hear about your discomfort. I’m praying for you and wishing you a quick diagnosis and a speedy recovery.
BTW, No kidding on the obnoxious pre-roll ad. I almost bailed out thinking you had uploaded the wrong media file by mistake or something.
Wow, guys! Thank you so much for all your support. I woke up from a drug-induced nap and read everyone’s comments. I’m very touched. We got out for a bit, which felt good. Now it’s time for a movie and some more sleep. lol!
Get well soon, but don’t rush back before you’re better. If you try to do too much you could get worse then be forced to take a much longer period of time off. The podcasts and the viewers will be here when you feel better.
Sincerely,
Thomas P.
Luria, Thoughts and prayers are with you. You are part of my routine. We will all be here when you are ready to come back. Maybe this is a good time to ponder having children. I know a great site to get you caught up on all the baby gear. ;)
Hi Cali,
get well soon! But take your time. I really enjoy every show but I can wait until you recover completely.
Greetings from Hans (Berlin, Germany)
Don’t warry about us, we’ll just watch again the old episodes.
You just have to rest a bit and get back to gbtv when you’re really ready.
A HUGE hug from Italy!
Steve
GET WELL SOON CALI!!
I just wanted to take a moment to let you know we have you in our thoughts and prayers. It is always a scary thing when things are happening and no one knows exactly why.
Keep your spirits up and take all the time you need to rest and heal. We will still be here when you are better:)
*hugs&well wishes*,
i hope that you find out something positive &benign very soon.
and you have my complete compassion when it comes to your medication’s effects. i personally suffer with generalized dystonia. which is a nuero-muscular disease that cause me an immense amount of pain plus fatigue on it’s own. than the piles of medications i’m on have their own effects.
so hello &hugs from floaty land &i wish you well… truly i deeply do &i’ll keep you in my thoughts until i read or see more about how you are. mostly i hope you’re staying in good spirits and thinking &feeling the best.
with goodness, love, &caring,
Katy… blessed be. healthy, hopeful, &safe may we all always be ^_^
Hi Cali,
I really feel for you. Having any kind of itch based, scratch induced rah is sheer hell. I’m just coming out of a rather nasty eczema flare-up at the moment and I know it’s not at all nice. Hoping and praying you get better soon.
R’Copeh
Hope you feel better Cali!

Hi Cali,
do not wear gloves - it forces the chance of a superinfection with bacteria.
I like your show - isn´t it graet how all your viewers care about you - I´m really astonished!
Greetings from the baltic ocean in Kiel (Germany)
While the world media were focussed on the risks to humans from bird flu, they completely overlooked the very real and present danger of the human variant of foot and mouth disease… ;-D
Get well soon Cali.
Get Well Soon. Cra451
Get well soon! Hope you feel better soon!
@ Steve Nordstrom who said:
> why can’t they come up with a better name for this disease
It has a better name, Coxsackie, but that sounds like something out of a Monty Python sketch.
To wit:
“I am Dr. Lipschitz and you have Cocksackie!”
“Cocksackie you say! Balderdash!”
“Harrumph!”
“Harrumph to you sir!”
And then something with a dead parrot, I don’t know, I’m spent.
Also since it’s a condition that hits a lot of daycares and preschools, you don’t want your little one shouting “Mommy! My Coxsackie itches bad!” in the middle of the supermarket.
So Hand-Foot-and-Mouth it is!
(Get well Cali, hope this gives you a pain-free smile)
Now Neal, you be nice to her with the blooper reel. She can’t defend herself right now.
But I’m sure when she’s feeling better you’ll pay!
Get well Cali.
Hi Cali
Hope you’re soon feeling better: and that the new Doctor can sort you out!
Best wishes; and get well soon!
AJP
Hey Cali (and Neal!) Best wishes for a full recovery. We’ll all still be here for you when you are back :)
Cali,
Get better soon.
With all this postive energy, You should be up and about real soon. So soak it all up, Think of all the sleep your catching up on.
Get Well Soon
Hope you feel better soon.
Get some rest and have Neil take care of you for a few days. ;)
I’ve had viral infections whereby i’ve needed bloods done and meds myself !
Its not nice, but i hope that things turn out like mine and it just kinda goes away, i had many a blotchy/itchy path of skin with mine, dont know how it happened, bur it went away quickly.
Heres to your speed recovery !
Get well soon Cali! And no, I wouldn’t buy pink electronics even though I believe in the cause… I would however by red, or perhaps orange electronics. I cashed in my $100 iPhone credit today toward a 160 GB iPod… see you after I finish loading 160GB… days from now!
Get well, seriously… get well!
Neal and Cali,
Please take care and get well soon. By the way my wife loves pink. Pink Dodger caps, pink t-shirts, pink Crocs, pink iPod, and etc.
John & Lisa
Cali,
Take care of yourself and take all the time you need before coming back. We will get by somehow.
Charliem
take it easy, and look after yourself.
best wishes from west London.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Get well soon.
just dropping a comment to wish a quick recovery.
I had to comment, and I normally don’t. Anywhere.
I’m not a ‘Shiny, Happy’ sort of person but I really do enjoy Geek Brief.
I had noticed a drop in energy in you after the road trip and wondered if something was wrong.
I’m happy to see that you can keep your spirits up and keep up with the show as best you can.
It’s refreshing to see real people living real lives willing to be public.
I’m an old harda** who has been around this type of technology since the beginning in the 70’s so seeing your fresh approach to presenting tech is a joy.
Thank you, and get well soon.
Sending good thoughts. Hope you feel better soon.
Cali,
You’re in my prayers, I can’t imagine how hard it must be for you. I really have enjoyed your podcast and hope you recover soon. I hope to meet and your husband someday at a meet up here in the DFW area. BTW, Your show has been a real breath of fresh air.
Get well soon
Ted Byars
I hope you feel better soon!
Take the Vicadin! I took some when I was in the hospital for 10 weeks a couple of years ago. As long as you don’t abuse it, it’s fine, and it works goooood.
Best wishes and GWS!
Hey Cali!
Just dropping by to add my well wishes to everyone else’s. Take it easy and recover fully - we’ll still be here waiting but we want you to be back to your old “shiny, happy” self. Make sure Neil takes care of himself as well - we can’t have him coming down with this next!
Take care!
J
Wow - this is incredible. What a great fan base. Proves there is something rather special about GBTV -
I’ll echo the promise from others that your fan base will be here when you get back, so take the time you need to recover fully - resist the urge to rush back early. We will all survive without our regular dose of Cali until you are better.
Cali,
Sorry to hear you’re not feeling good.
Get well soon.
Take care.
Jeff
I hope all goes well. Not only do I enjoy the show, but I appreciate the work that the two of you do.
*good vibes to you*
Get well soon! I’ll miss my happy shinny tech gadget news while you’re convalescing and I look forward to your return to good health and happy tech stories. Be good to yourselves and don’t worry about us, we’ll be here when you’re ready.
Just a short note to let you know that I am lifting you up in prayer. The same goes for Neal. You two are a wonderful couple. Thanks for the inspiration, both personally and professionally.
A Brother-in-Christ,
David
Take care of yourself Cali! We’re all rooting for ya out here! Don’t stress about things here, a Hiatus is not going to hurt your show. Most especially not one for a good reason! You have a lot of loyal fans so just make sure you guys make yourselves the #1 priority over there. Best of wishes and stay shiny!
Hope you get better, and can’t wait to see the bloopers
feel better soon!

I’m not one to normally post comments, but you are not a normal host–in a good way! I truly hope you find some relief soon.
As one who suffers from chronic dry skin that the docs can’t agree on the source, I feel for you.
Please keep in mind that this is likely an acute condition that you will be able to kick soon. I’m thankful you have a great support system and look forward to more GBs when you are better.

Take your Vicodin girl. It works great. Get well soon. This 66 year old man loves your Pod Cast and am looking forward to your return.
I hope you’ll be better soon …

The natural way to treat viral infections is to use essential oils. Inhaling lavender or eucalyptus essential oil is gentle and effective. I recommend organic.
Get well soon.
Hey Cali,
Get well soon and get back on the air - we miss you!
Bye.
Hi Cali!
I’m watching your podcast from Perpignan (France) and I’m hoping for you that you will recover soon.
If that’s an allergic reaction (and it can be pretty fast and nasty, believe me ;) ) you can relax, doctors can treat that very easily. If it’s not, think about it twice: Lips bigger than Angelina Jolie’s without surgery IS a gift. I’m not saying that you were not charming without them but, it could be an advantage to promote the show ;) .
More seriously, I’ll advise the same thing that have been said here, take your time, do not think about workworkwork, we will be there when you’ll come back.
PS: Neil, we’re counting on you to take care of her. It’s our geek idol and there can’t be an other one … ;).
